MUAMMAR AL-QATHAFI and the “LION of the Desert”

JAMES [Rupert’s son] Murdoch’s most audacious shot at Silvio Berlusconi took place in July 2009, when the Australian media baron aired an ultraviolent 1981 war film, “The Lion of the Desert”, that had been banned by the Italian government for 17 years.

The film, with an all-star cast of Anthony Quinn, Oliver Reed, Rod Steiger and Irene Papas, depicted Libyan guerillas fighting the Italian Army during World War II—and was funded by Muammar al-Qathafi, the de-facto leader of Libya.
Murdoch’s broadcast was timed to coincide with al-Qathafi’s historic first visit to Italy and was promoted with an extensive publicity blitz. The film, which had been distributed as a bootleg for years and served as a staple secret showing at art houses, aired on June 11 to high ratings.

Italian authorities did not interfere. Meanwhile, Muammar al-Qathafi made sure his Italian visit generated some waves of its own.

While meeting Berlusconi, Muammar al-Qathafi pinned to his chest a large black-and-white picture of Libyan Sufi guerilla leader—and protagonist of “Lion of the Desert”—Omar Mukhtar dating from the day before he was hanged by the Italians in 1931. Muammar al-Qathafi wore the picture, photocopied and awkwardly pinned to his colonel’s military adornment, to multiple public gatherings during his Italian trip.

The movie itself, which enthralled Italians with its broadcast, is an unlikely mélange of gratuitous violence, Hollywood historic epic tropes and post-Fanon third-worldism. Benito Mussolini is portrayed in strutting comic-opera glory by Rod Steiger. Reed depicts an Italian Fascist general. Anthony Quinn plays the Libyan guerilla Mukhtar as a reprise of Viva Zapata!, only with his character’s Sufi associations erased by personal order of al-Qathafi. Another notably non-Middle Eastern actor, John Gielgud, plays Mukhtar’s associate Sharif al-Gharyiani.

This biography of a Libyan rebel leader would play out as a war movie in the Lawrence of Arabia mode, only with enough blood and violence to remind one of the director Moustapha Akkad’s background.

Al-Qathafi essentially bankrolled the project. “Lion of the Desert” was released in 1981, during a period when al-Qathafi was reveling in openly antagonizing the West. The year before, five Libyan dissidents were murdered in exile in Italy and it was blamed falsely upon Al-Gaddafi’s. Muammar al-Qathafi’s relations with world powers were at an all-time low. A few months after the film’s cinema release, American citizens were banned from traveling to Libya.

Reviews of the film, while noting that it was an admirably fast-paced action movie and performed up to the epic expectations of other war films, never failed to mention the al-Qathafi association. As a result, “Lion” bombed at American and European box offices and turned into a cult film instead.

“Lion of the Desert” portrayed a local Sufi resistance campaign to Italian colonial rule in Libya in bloody, loving detail. Following a variant practiced by the local Senussi order, the group attracted a mix of Arab and Amazigh adherents. After the collapse of Ottoman rule and the institution of an Italian government in the early 20th century, the Senussis quickly reconfigured themselves into a resistance movement. The elderly Mukhtar led tribal guerrillas into battle under the Senussi banner. Armed groups consisting of 100-300 men would conduct hit-and-run attacks on the Italians. There was widespread support for the rebels among the general population. The Italians and the Senussi Order were popularly known as Libya’s “day” and “night” governments. During the day, Italians would collect taxes; at night, the Senussi would collect zakah.

Italian reaction was swift and brutal. In an attempt to flush out civilian support for the Senussis, Graziani constructed a series of concentration camps based on those used by the British during the Boer War. As a result of a lack of food and harsh discipline—again, including regular hangings—tens of thousands of Libyan prisoners died.

There is a short scene at the beginning showing Anthony Quinn teaching the Holy Quran. During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Gaddafi was engaged in a contentious debate with Libya’s ulama over the content of his Green Book. The Green Book was the subject of critical sermons by the mixed-up and evil ulama who preferred the SAUDI WAHABI view of distorted Islam created by the Brrtish in 1928. Despite al-Qathafi’s religious zeal, the criticisms continued and culminated in a 1978 meeting between him and the most influential ulama. Muammar would never give-in to WAHABISM or the Salafists.
The Libyan leader’s financing of the film (and its sister movie, the Prophet Mohammad biopic The Messenger) was not done out of a beneficent love of epic war movies and a hope for Hollywood profits. “Lion of the Desert” was released in 1981, after the Egypt-Israel peace treaty and in a period when al-Qathafi was actively positioning himself as a leader of Resistance to the Western power axis.

One influential American critic, Vincent Canby of the New York Times, drew explicit comparisons in his review of the film’s Cyrenaican concentration camps to Lebanon’s Palestinian refugee camps. More so, he believed Akkad and al-Qathafi were using the film to portray Mukhtar as a predecessor of Yasser Arafat, who was then one of the Libyan leader’s primary clients. The theme of Cyrenaicans-as-Palestinians appears to have frequently been on the mind of American viewers. Hollywood industry bible Variety’s review, anonymous as per magazine regulations, noted, “While never explicit, the overtones of the Bedouins’ desire for international recognition, Mukhtar’s insistence that confiscated lands must be returned (with new Italian settlements on them not to be tolerated) and other militant dialog emphasize parallels with today’s Palestinians.”

The Italian reaction to “Lion of the Desert” was understandably angry. Prior to the film’s release, Italian parliamentarians denounced it, and protests spread among large sections of the Italian public. These were accompanied by the inevitable jingoistic newspaper op-eds and angry television talk show hosts that such films and books often spur. Akkad’s film was quickly banned in Italy on the grounds of “defamation of the armed forces.” Ownership and screening of the movie was made into a criminal offense under Italian censorship law.

Lion was notably denounced before an attempted 1982 screening by then-Prime Minister Giulio Anderotti for “damaging the honor of the army.” Another attempted screening in Trento in 1987 was stopped by threats of legal action; the film’s only legal showing in Italy in the 20th century was as an “education” display at the 1988 Rimini film festival.

That was until Rupert Murdoch exhumed “Lion of the Desert” from illicit DVD trading lists and the world of torrents. It apparently fulfilled News Corp.’s ambitions—Berlusconi’s sensibilities were tweaked, Murdoch got inches upon inches of press in the Italian print media and Sky generated some of its highest ratings for 2009.

Berlusconi did not want to be part-of a censorship row; as,
he admired Muammar al-Qathafi, made a concorde with Libya, and promoted “Lion of the Desert” to be aired.
For Murdoch’s next retaliatory attack against Berlusconi in Italy, we did have to wait too long.
Silvio Berlusconi is now in prison (as of 2013) serving a sentence and lifetime restrictions to his career (and Silvio’s very existance at stake):
He has been subject, too, to a nasty smear campaign—but not quite as great as the Campaign against Muammar al-Qathafi![EDITED from Neal Ungerleider‘s article on 26 JANUARY 2010 in WORLDPRESS.org]

‘LION OF THE DESERT,’ BEDOUIN VS. MUSSOLINI

By VINCENT CANBY, (for the NY TIMES)

http://www.nytimes.com/1981/04/17/movies/lion-of-the-desert-bedouin-vs-mussolini.html

Published: 17 April 1981

Money may not be able to buy happiness, but Moustapha Akkad’s ”Lion of the Desert” demonstrates that money, at least a very great deal of it – reportedly more than $30 million – can buy enough talent, know-how and extras to make a big historical movie that is at least technically respectable and occasionally spectacular in its geography. The film is the biggest piece of movie partisanship to come out of the Middle East or North Africa since Otto Preminger’s ”Exodus.”

”Lion of the Desert” is the story of Omar Mukhtar, the Bedouin leader who fought a brilliant, relentless guerrilla war against the Italian invaders of Libya from 1911 until his capture and execution by Mussolini’s forces in 1931.

The film, which opens today at the Ziegfeld and other theaters, is a very official-looking work. H.A.L. Craig’s screenplay doesn’t fool around with too many ”personal” stories. Though there are the obligatory sequences involving bereaved Arab mothers and orphaned children, the film’s view aspires to be epic, that of nation fighting against nation.

What we know about the leading characters we learn from seeing them carrying out their official duties. Chief among them are Mukhtar (Anthony Quinn), as he directs the desert warfare, meets Italian representatives in peace talks designed to fail (by the Italians), and finally at his trial and execution; General Graziani (Oliver Reed), an ambitious, brutal officer who finally triumphs over the Bedouins, and Mussolini, impersonated by Rod Steiger, as he struts around his palace, issuing orders with a sneer. Even Irene Papas, who plays the wife of one of Mukhtar’s aides, looks official, if only because she has reached that unfortunate time in her career when her mere appearance becomes an official representation of grief.

The film, which has been well photographed by Jack Hildyard, is virtually an unending series of big battle scenes. These are interrupted from time to time by scenes set in Italian planning rooms or Bedouin planning oases and by montages depicting the ferocious means by which the invaders eventually subdued the Bedouins. These scenes are effective in the way that all scenes showing oppressors and oppressed usually are.

Mr. Quinn looks most lofty and wise as the troubled leader who hates war but fights it as his duty to God. It cannot be a coincidence that his carefully stressed beliefs in a fundamental kind of Islam evoke the image of Muammar el-Qaddafi of Libya, where most of the film was shot, nor that the Libyan leader sees himself as the leader of that part of the Moslem world that rejects the international policies of someone like President Anwar el-Sadat of Egypt.

There are also times when the film seems to be drawing parallels between Mukhtar’s position in the Arab world and that of Yasir Arafat, chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization, as when the Italians refuse to negotiate with Mukhtar on the grounds that he, like Mr. Arafat, does not represent an independent nation.

I suspect also that the movie wouldn’t be unhappy if we should equate the camps the Italians put the Bedouins into with the Palestine refugee camps in Lebanon and even the Nazi concentration camps, though there are no gas ovens in sight in the film.

”Lion of the Desert” is a canny film, though it’s probably a film from which one will take just what one took into it. No expense has been spared. In addition to those already mentioned, the cast includes Raf Vallone, as a ”good” if weak Italian officer, and John Giulgud as a ”bad” Bedouin, one who collaborates with the enemy. The actors are as adequate as their roles in what is essentially a pageant allow.

”Lion of the Desert,” which has been rated PG (”Parental Guidance Suggested”), contains some scenes of battle that are fairly explicit in their violence.

“Qathafi! Libya’s New Lion of the Desert” [Libia – El León del Desierto]
History compiled by Les Blough
Parque Indoamericano. History by Axis of Logic
Wednesday, 14 Sept. 2011

The following history of Libya is offered as background and context for the current war being waged on Libya by western countries.

In 1910 Italy waged war against the Ottoman Empire, gaining control of the Ottoman colony that is now modern day Libya, and set out to establish “The Fourth Shore,” the rebirth of the Roman Empire in Africa. In 1911 Italian forced deportation of Libyans to the Tremiti Islands and by 1912, a third of these Libyan refugees died from starvation and a lack of shelter.

Libya became an Italian colony from 1910 when the Italians attacked Tripoli and lasted until to 1947. After World War I Italy called it’s policy in Libya “economic colonization” meant to exploit the country’s natural resources. When Italy colonized the country in 1910 they began to develop and exploit Libya’s petroleum and never allowed the Libyans to take control and nationalize their own oil fields. Through the years, Italy managed 90% of Libya’s oil refinement.

In 1934 Italy divided the Ottoman provinces of Tripolitania and Cyrenaicaland into four provinces—Tripoli, Misrata, Benghazi, and Darnah and called it the Colony of Libya – a name Diocletian gave the land 1500 years earlier.

The film, Lion of the Desert is devoted to the 20 year war between Libyan Revolutionaries and Italy. In 1929, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini was faced with what would be a 20-year long war against the Libyan people. At the time he had over a million Italian soldiers stationed in Libya. Mussolini appointed Italian General Rodolpfo Graziani as his sixth governor in Libya and Graziani was determined to defeat Omar Mukhtar and his guerilla fighters. Mukhtar was a teacher turned guerilla to defeat the invading fascists.

Graziani led the Italians to commit atrocities, destroying crops, killing civilians, executing prisoners of war and imprisoning Libyans in conscentration camps surrounded by barbed wire. In contrast, Mukhtar trained his guerilla fighters not to kill captured Italian soldiers because it is forbidden by Islam and that they were only fighting to defend their homeland. He declared that Muslims are taught to hate war itself.

Graziani had to his advantage the might of the Italian Army and used tanks and aircraft in the desert for the first time in history. The Libyan Arabs and Berbers on the other hand fought with primitive weapons that were no match for the Italian war machine and they suffered heavy losses as a result. In spite of this huge power differential, Mukhtar and the fighters he led into battle denied the Italians a victory for 20 years.

Idris as-Senussi, became Libya’s first and only king reigned came into power with British backing after supporting the west during WWII.

Unless otherwise indicated by hyperlinks, the following history is based upon reports from the BBC and China.org

In 1942 the U.S. Euro allies forced Italy out of Libya leaving Fezzan in French control and Cyrenaica and Tripolitania under British control.

In 1949 with the approval of the U.K. and the United Nations, King Idris declared Libya to be the independent Emirate of Cyrenaica in 1949. He wrote a new constitution, rubber stamped by his National Congress who then elected him as King of Libya. During his reign as King of Libya from 1951 to 1969 the country’s oil fields fell into the hands of western oil companies and the U.S. Air Force established the Wheelus Air Base near Tripoli.

In 1951 King Idris gave Britain the right to establish military bases for 20 years and in 1954 gave the US similar rights. The first US air base began with he crowning of Idris I in 1951 when the U.S. Air Force took over a former Italian air base and renamed the Wheelus Air base.

In 1956 Libya granted two American oil companies a concession of some 14 million acres.

In 1969 Libyan revolutionaries led by Muammar Qaddafi overthrew his monarchy the day before he was to turn it over to his son, the crown prince.

After the king had fled the country, the Libyan Revolutionary Command Council (RCC) headed by Gaddafi abolished the monarchy and the constitution and proclaimed the new Libyan Arab Republic with the motto “freedom, socialism, and unity.”

In 1970 the Libyan government shut down the British airbase in Tobruk and the giant US Wheelus air force base in Tripoli and began to nationalize most government property, the nation’s oil fields and other commercial businesses in the country The British agreed to pull all of its military out of Libya the same year.

In 1973 Libya, Saudi Arabia, and other Arab states declared a total ban on oil exports to the United States.

From 1972 to 1980 Col. Qaddafi attempted to unify Arab states in negotiations with Egypt, Tunisia and Syria. Libya and Tunisia reached an agreement to form the United Arab Republic but due to western intervention it was not achieved.

In 1981 the United States shot down two Libyan aircraft over the Gulf of Sirte over Libya’s territorial waters.

In 1984 the UK broke off diplomatic relations with Libya. and at anti-Gaddafi protest at the Libyan Embassy in London when several protesters were injured and Yvonne Fletcher, a British police officer was killed.

In 1984 Col. Qaddafi launched the “Great Man Made River Project” which was completed in 1996. Dubbed “The 8th Wonder of the World,” it is the largest underground network of man made water supply in the world consisting of 2,820 kilometers (1,752 miles) of pipes and aquaducts and 1,300 wells drawing water from the massive Nubian Sandstone Aquifer System. It supplies Libya with 70 percent of its water and as the world’s largest irrigation system, the government has used it to turn desert sand into fertile agricultural land. The aquifier has also benefited other other African nations in the quest for food and water sovereignty and independence. At the rate of consumption in 2007 scientists say it could last for a thousand years. The system and industrial plants that manufacture the massive pipes were bombed by NATO earlier this year and currently, Libya is struggling for a lack of water and food.

In 1986 the U.S. blamed for the bombing of a West Berlin disco frequented by members of the US military. President Ronald Reagan ordered a U.S. attack on Libya from the air, bombing Libyan military facilities, residential areas of Tripoli and Benghazi, killing 101 people, and Gaddafi’s house, killing his daughter as an act of vengeance. The United States also cut economic and commercial ties with Libya and froze Libyan assets in the U.S.

Statue created by Libyan sculptor commemorating the U.S. attack on Libyan aircraft in 1981

Following the deadly U.S. attack, the Libyan government erected a statue with a fist dragging down a U.S. war jet. As part of their deceptive media campaign to demonize Col. Qaddafi, CNN and other western media repeatedly showed the mercenaries tearing down the stature during their looting of Qaddafi’s Bab al-Azizia compound in Tripoli on August 23, 2011. The corporate media intent was obvious – deliberately giving the impression that the statue signified Qadaffi’s pride about the terrorist attack that brought down a PanAm airliner over Lockerbie in December 1988 and blamed on Libya despite Libya’s denial and a lack of evidence that Libya was involved.

1988 is the year the PanAm flight from London to New York blew up over Lockerbie, Scotland killing 259 people on board and 11 people on the ground. Libya was blamed for the attack. A year later France blamed Libya for the downing of a French airliner over Niger that killed 170 people and in 1999, France convicted six Libyans in absentia. The Libyan government denied responsibility.

There were a number of serious irregularities in the investigation into the Lockerbie which was shrouded in controversy. Despite Libya’s acceptance of responsibility under tremendous international pressure and threat, questions remain to this day. For example, in October 2009 Detective Stuart Henderson who headed the original Lockerbie investigation revealed that eight “high level suspects” of the bombing were never interviewed. He said they were all male and were never ruled out of the investigation for the terrorist attack. Hendeson told The Scotsman:

“We submitted eight other names of people that we wished to interview that were strong suspects. Unfortunately, we never got that opportunity. I am delighted they are making moves to see if there is anything further, because no matter what anybody says, we did not ever say it was just Megrahi we were after. We never said that. We were after his bosses.”

In 1992 the UN imposed sanctions on Libya for the Lockerbie bombing which remained for 7 years until 1999.

In 1999 Libya sent two men accused of the Lockerbie bombing to Netherlands for trial leading the UN to suspend sanctions and the UK to restore relations with Libya. One man was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison after losing his appeal but later released from prison to return to Libya. The other man was found not guilty by the Dutch courts.

In September 2000 criminal elements in Libya killed dozens of African migrant workers – which has now been repeated in 2011 by the NATO radicals and mercenaries but this time on a much larger scale.

After the U.S. attacked Iraq in 2003 on the pretext of having “weapons of mass destruction, Libya was also accused of having WMD and the government announced that it will abandon its WMD programs. International weapons inspectors confirmed that Libya had indeed abandoned development of so-called WMD.

Also in 2003 Libya, just to MAKE PEACE, agreed to pay families of the Lockerbie bombing victims $2.7bn and feigned (but never accepted) responsibility for the bombings, in a letter to the UN Security Council. In 2004 Libya agreed to pay families of victims of the 1989 bombing of French passenger aircraft over Sahara and to pay $35m to to the victims of the 1986 bombing of the Berlin nightclub.

After those concessions by the Libyan government Tony Blair visited Libya in 2004 and the EU agreed to ending the EU-Libya arms embargo imposed in 1986.

In 2005 Libya auctioned oil and gas exploration licenses which opened the country to the return of US energy companies for the first time in more than 20 years. A year later, the U.S. restored full diplomatic ties with the Libyan government.

In 2006 February Libyan Muslims in Benghazi joined international protests angered by the Danish newspaper’s cartoon by a Zionist that depicted the Prophet Muhammad as a bomber.

In 2008 Italian PM Berlusconi apologized to Libya for damage inflicted by Italy during the colonial era and signs a $5-billion investment deal by way of compensation. In the same year, George Bush sent Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to meet Col. Qaddafi in Tripoli, which was the first visit by a US secretary of state since 1953. After the visit, Rice said relations between the United States and Libya have entered a “new phase.”

In 2009 Col. Qaddafi made his first visit to Italy and he shook hands with Barack Obama at the G8 summit there.

In 2010 Russia agreed to sell Libya weapons including fighter jets, tanks and air defence systems, a contract worth $1.8bn. Also in 2010 British Petroleum began drilling for petroleum off the Libyan coast.

Last December Wikileaks disclosed US diplomatic cables showing that Col. Qaddafi threatened to cut trade with Britain.

After coming to power in 1969, the Libyan Revolutionary Command Council (RCC) government nationalized Libya’s natural resources and some commercial property. This was followed by government action directing revenues from Africa’s biggest petroleum industry into education, healthcare and public housing as human rights or all Libyans. Public education was made free and primary education compulsory for both boys and girls and health care is provided at no cost. In 1977 the government changed the name of Libya to the Great Socialist People’s Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. “Jamahiriya” was coined by Col. Qaddafi and is translated “the state of the masses”.

In early 2011 the U.S. and NATO incited violence among some disgruntled tribesmen eastern Libya, hired mercenaries from neighboring countries, members of Al Qaeda among them, and launched a bombing campaign that has destroyed the country over the last 7 months. Motivation for the criminal war involves theft of Libya’s petroleum, destabilization for an expanded Israel and as James Petras points out, a response to their created “Arab Spring” to use Libya as a warning to other Arab peoples not to rise up against western-backed Arab dictators as in Qatar and Saudi Arabia (The Gulf Emarites).

PERMITTING INTERFERENCE IN DOMESTIC AFFARS!!!

IMPORTANT: full briefing of Mr. Tarek Mitri in the Security Council today about the political and security situation in Libya

Mr. President

1. A Stlemtem Report of the Secretary-General , which provides information on the activities of the United Nations Mission of Support in Libya during the six months and provides a balanced reading of the political and security developments in Libya. That concerted factors Motherh of the domestic and regional weighing down on the political process and increases the difficulty of the task addressed by the Libyan authorities, any for National Motmr year and the government, as it seeks to ensure the peaceful progress on through the democratic transition .

2. We have seen during the last three months , more acute political differences . And took two blocs for Asia Seta N Alrellisetan , for various reasons, resolutions attaches their participation Ktnzimin of the politicians in realization Elmo Ssat the political national . Although he was partially undo all the resolutions , they came succumbed uncomfortable with the broad popular categories of political parties and a strong inversely polarized in public life

3. And there , too, after a regional political transformations in Libya. Was of recent developments , particularly in Egypt and Tunisia, the effect on the political scene appeared positions tinged distressed as I checked on the outlook of powers to the problems faced by Libya and dealt with the emerging regional data .

Sir Alreyes

4. Happened in recent days serious prejudice to the movement of oil exports as a result of the protests in a number of facilities in eastern Libya , causing damage to the Libyan economy threatened stability. That prompted the National Oil ESTABLISHMENT to announce an unprecedented situation is Tara as a ” force majeure ” prevents commitment Bmujbat contracts signed . And these protests were related to differences on the protection and invite other facilities in the east to federalism.

5. In a country of oil revenues, about eighty percent of the national income and a ninety – seven percent of exports , the government faces the risk of inability to pay Mtojbadtha the financial unless solve the present crisis quickly .

Mr. President

6. Still approve transitional justice law hangs in the National Ground passing year, and the United Nations Mission of Support in Libya believes that the issuance of the said Act is vital for dealing with the tragedies of the past and Geroima which is crucial in facilitating the difficult process of national reconciliation .

7. The case is still faithful of the detainees , among the estimated total of eight thousand , not solve the problem . Despite the fact that the Ministry of Justice pointed to the low number of complaints , the persistence of torture and ill-treatment call for concern. However, the UN mission recorded a marked improvement in the conditions of detention and treatment in centers under the effective authority of the Ministry of Justice, where he trained police Alqdoaah the job.

8. And I ‘ve been Astnav judicial action with respect to a number of Mswola the trial of the former regime adults. After the condemnation and former Minister of Education Ahmed Ibrahim and it Blaaadam governance on July 31 , is expected to begin soon in the trial of thirty – five defendants, including Saif al-Islam Gaddafi.

9. In this regard , to CKD UN mission need for a consistent approach to ensure respect for accepted judicial standards in these trials and to avoid indiscriminate accusations and to strive to gather information and historical documents that reveal precisely what happened under the previous government . And conduct fair trials in the coming months will put mo Ssat the judiciary is at stake . But the security situation in the country and the continuing attacks on judges and lawyers and the role of Justice arranges large on Msoulyat authorities .

Sir Alreyes

But the law , which was adopted luck as limited representation allocated six seats for women out of the total members of the sixtieth which accounted for less than sixteen percent of them were in Elmo pass Aloutnewalaam the the elections in July 2012 .

12. For its part, allocated six seats minorities . The organizations and personalities belong to these groups persistent claim that recognizes the constitutional provisions relating to linguistic and cultural rights of the two – thirds majority in Hi Yeh drafting of the constitution , according to the constitutional declaration , but by consensus .

13. Has been appointed the Supreme National Commission for Elections which began work in planning and preparation elections , and full support in all functional areas by a team of specialist elections to the UN mission .
Mr. Alreyes ,

14. Has consistently overwhelm security problems on the interests of the Libyan people and cause concern to him. The Tripoli knew, after my intervention previous front esteemed , armed confrontations between competing rebel battalions . Due to the weakness of the potential of the state in maintaining security and protection of citizens , commissioned the head of the National Ground pass the newly elected , Mr. Nori Abu – arrows , operations room , which includes battalions rebels allied with the task of policing in the capital.

15. And I knew other Libyan regions between the forces of political tensions and armed tribal disputes erupted caused the occurrence of a number of dead and wounded. And targeted assassinations continued مسوو yen ‘s security officials , particularly in eastern Libya, political activists and journalists. And planted explosives and offers a number of diplomats of the attacks and the United Nations has received threats and increased the number of offenses . And has been a critical issue of border security and awaiting processing
.
16. On the other hand , there has been insufficient progress in integrating the rebels into the Libyan army and not in the insurance conditions Almhih for their return to civilian life. However, the increase in salaries for military personnel , starting from January 2014 , would encourage the rebels to join the army. The same applies to training between twelve and fifteen thousand soldiers abroad . And we must accelerate the restructuring of the army and the balance now missing due to the large numbers of officers compared to small adult officers and soldiers . As a police van to adapt a number of rebels continues , has achieved some results.

17. The focus on the security situation on the direct and strong differences between politicians and rebels have hampered construction battalions of the national security system strong , coordinated and effective .
Sir Alreyes

18. While the reports provided for your esteemed last June , alluded to the enormous difficulties that you know Libya after four decades of odd authoritarian rule . After a month marks the second anniversary of the fall of the authoritarian regime . And it seems to us today is evident that preconceived ideas about the political transition devolve to the disappointment that did not want to fail . Perhaps the free and fair elections opened the way for the democratic process , but raised expectations could not wa mo powers of political Ssat be achieved . The Libyan experience has shown the urgent need for inclusive dialogue does not exclude one and a consensus on national priorities during the transitional phase and about general trends and systems of governance and Rulaadalosasah for political action.

19. Today there is a kind of suspicion. , Right down to the extent of rejection , about the political process . However, this does not mean the loss of faith in the national unity , democracy and the rule of law . The commitment Libyans Balmpada of that revolution fought for it under the deep .
Mr. Alreyes ,

20. Libyan authorities have agreed , after demanding political trends and social forces all living national dialogue , setting him and call him . The dialogue , in the present circumstance , the involvement of political and social events and revolutionary , traditional and modern in the address pressing national issues and consensus on goals and المبادي the governing

I felt in my meetings with the Presidency for National Motmr year and the government is convinced that the joint national dialogue right to contribute to advancing the national interest above partisan impulses and accounts and circumstantial . The dialogue , especially the presence of disappointment from the political process , that provide opportunities for expression and contribute to the public life of those who are in a state of isolation or spacing or face the . And would also strengthen the national capacity to address the most pressing issues and mobilize support for state-building efforts , particularly in the security and justice sectors .

22. Libyan has called many of the United Nations Mission to play an active role in the launch of the national dialogue and facilitation . Of course not shrink in carrying Mswolatna as we follow our determination that the process is a Libyan initiative and led by a Libyan . We have confirmed that the Libyan authorities and other interested personalities and opinion-makers that the United Nations is ready , but is committed to provide advice and technical assistance to the efforts of dialogue Whatever you choose formula and hoping not to be delayed.
Thank you.

WHO Refuses to Publish Report on Cancers and Birth Defects

in Iraq Caused by Depleted Uranium

Ammunition

Global Research, 13 September  2013

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has categorically refused in defiance of its own mandate to share evidence uncovered in Iraq that US

military use of Depleted Uranium and other weapons have not only killed many civilians, but continue to result in the birth of deformed babies.

This issue was first brought to light in 2004 in a WHO expert report “on the long-term health of Iraq’s civilian population resulting from depleted uranium (DU) weapons”. This earlier report was “held secret”, namely suppressed by the WHO:

The study by three leading radiation scientists cautioned that children and adults could contract cancer after breathing in dust containing DU, which is radioactive and chemically toxic. But it was blocked from publication by the World Health Organization (WHO), which employed the main author, Dr Keith Baverstock, as a senior radiation advisor. He alleges that it was deliberately suppressed, though this is denied by WHO. (See Rob Edwards, WHO ‘Suppressed’ Scientific Study Into Depleted Uranium Cancer Fears in Iraq, The Sunday Herald, February 24, 2004)

Almost nine years later, a joint WHO- Iraqi Ministry of Health Report on cancers and birth defect in Iraq was to be released in November 2012. “It has been delayed repeatedly and now has no release date whatsoever.”

To this date the WHO study remains “classified”.

According to Hans von Sponeck, former Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations,

“The US government sought to prevent the WHO from surveying areas in southern Iraq where depleted uranium had been used and caused serious health and environmental dangers.” (quoted in Mozhgan Savabieasfahani Rise of Cancers and Birth Defects in Iraq: World Health Organization Refuses to Release Data, Global Research, July 31, 2013

This tragedy in Iraq reminds one of US Chemical Weapons used in Vietnam. And that the US has failed to acknowledge or pay compensation or provide medical assistance to thousands of deformed children born and still being born due to American military use of Agent Orange throughout the country.

The millions of gallons of this chemical dumped on rural Vietnam were eagerly manufactured and sold to the Pentagon by companies Dupont, Monsanto and others greedy for huge profits.

Given the US record of failing to acknowledge its atrocities in warfare, I fear those mothers in Najaf and other Iraqi cities and towns advised not to attempt the birth of more children will never receive solace or help.

A United Nations that is no longer corrupted by the five Permanent Members of the Security Council is what is needed.

Brinley Bruton and Elisha Fieldstadt, NBC News As heavy rains further hampered rescue efforts on Sunday, residents in Colorado towns isolated by devastating floods have a choice: Leave now or face weeks without basic supplies, including running water and electricity, officials are warning. “We’re not trying to force anyone from their home. We’re not trying to be forceful, but we’re trying to be very factual and definitive about the consequences of their decision, and we hope that they will come down,” said Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle. Residents who insist on staying might not get another chance to leave for some time because rescuers won’t risk returning for people who chose not to evacuate, said Pelle. Some 14,500 people live in areas under evacuation orders, officials said, with 17 Colorado counties affected by the flood waters. Advertise | AdChoices

Four people were confirmed dead in the flooding, and 1,254 people are unaccounted for statewide, according to Micki Trost, spokeswoman at the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. That number is likely to fluctuate, said Trost. Officials are unsure of whether those who are unaccounted for are stranded, injured or just have not had the chance to reach out to family and friends because of poor communications in the area. The total area affected is bounded in the north by Fort Collins, the south by Colorado Springs, the west by the foothills of The Rockies, and the east by the Denver suburbs, officials said. Meanwhile, heavy rain in Boulder continued on Sunday prompting the National Weather Service to issue a flash flood warning through late afternoon. A small amount of rainfall could cause flash flooding and mudslides because the ground has been saturated since Wednesday, according to weather.com. “The problem now is relatively little additional rainfall may trigger additional flash flooding,” said weather.com senior meteorologist Jonathan Erdman. The persistent rain also prevented planned helicopter rescues. “It will affect our air operations if it keeps raining,” Colorado National Guard Lt. James Goff said Sunday. “We’ll look at ground operations of any other courses of action.” Sixteen helicopters were prepared to deploy in Larimer County but would not take flight until “weather allows them to do so,” said Nick Christensen, executive officer at the Larimer Country Sheriff’s Department. “If there’s an opening and they can bring them up, they will,” Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith assured. In Larimer alone, 482 people are unaccounted for, Christensen said. Some of the presumed missing people might be a result of cross referencing issues among several lists, he said. “We’ll work hard to whittle down that 482,” said Christensen. He did concede, “We do anticipate that there will be additional fatalities,” adding, “Hopefully it’s not an overwhelming number.” Two 80-person search and rescue FEMA crews will disperse on Sunday in Larimer to thoroughly search structures individually, Smith said. “What’s hard to describe until you’ve been there … and you smell it and you feel it … river developed out of nowhere,” Smith said. “There’s the potential that people got caught up where it felt safe,” he added. President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster in the flood-ridden state, the White House announced on Sunday. The declaration allows Boulder County home owners and business owners who are suffering from flood devastation to receive federal funds, including low cost loans and grants for temporary housing. “We are assuming there may be further loss of life and injuries,” Pelle said on Saturday. “Given the devastation on some of those canyons, it’s definitely a high probability.” Two of the four people confirmed dead were identified Sunday as 19-year-olds, Wiyanna Nelson and Wesley Quinlan, according to NBC affiliate, KUSA. The teens were in a car with two other friends but left the vehicle after it plunged into floodwaters, officials said. Their bodies were discovered on a road in Boulder. And one missing 80-year-old woman is presumed dead after witnesses watched floodwaters from the Big Thomson River rush through her home, Larimer County sheriff’s spokesman John Schulz said. Over the weekend, National Guardsmen in helicopters and truck convoys warned residents in paralyzed communities that their refusal to leave could be perilous. Nevertheless, dozens in hard hit Jamestown wanted to stay to watch over their homes. “I was thinking about staying,” special education teacher Brian Shultz, 38, told the AP. “I have a lot of training in wilderness survival.” He probably had enough beer to last the whole time, he added. Shultz became emotional when he compared his lot to that of his neighbors. “At least all of our stuff’s there and will be there when we get back. The people right by the river, their houses were washed away,” the AP quoted him as saying. “Other people thought their houses were going to be OK, and then they started to go. It’s just really devastating.” In areas experiencing a reprieve from the flooding, residents got a chance to evaluate their very wet homes. The Poudre River in Laporte swept through Wendy Clark’s home but has since receded. “This mud smells disgusting,” said Clark. “I don’t know how long that’s going to be around.” Additional reporting by NBC News’ Tracy Connor, Miguel Alamaguer and Daniella Silva, and The Associated Press.

More than 1,000 unaccounted for in deadly Colo. floods

Colorado authorities are urging residents to make sure they’re accounted for, as the state grapples with a long list of people who have not been heard from since the floods.

Gary Stoller, USA TODAY12:31 p.m. EDT September 16, 2013

Historic flooding leaves weary residents reeling amid the dark forecast of more rain to come.

The number of people unaccounted for in flood-ravaged Colorado rose Sunday to 1,254 as flooding spread to 15 counties and rain continued to fall.

Many of those unaccounted for were reported unreachable on the phone by family members.

“We don’t expect to find 1,254 fatalities,” said Micki Trost, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

Five fatalities — four in Boulder County and one in El Paso County — have been confirmed since the bulk of the rain began Wednesday evening. Still the number of fatalities could rise. An 80-year-old woman in Larimer County’s Cedar Grove was missing and presumed dead after her home was washed away by the flooding Big Thompson River , the county sheriff’s office said Sunday. The woman was injured and unable to leave her home Friday night, sheriff’s spokesman John Schulz said. A second Larimer County 60-year-old woman is also presumed dead after the river destroyed her home the same night.

Some 1,500 homes have been destroyed and about 17,500 have been damaged, according to an initial estimate released by the Colorado Office of Emergency Management.

Some people just don’t know what’s come of their relatives. A Dallas man saw a photo of his mother’s Big Thompson Canyon home in ruins on a Denver TV website. “I don’t know that she’s even OK,” Rob Clements told The Coloradoan about his mother, Libby Orr, 73, with whom he last spoke on Thursday. “I presume she is. But her house, if not completely gone, fell into the river and is most of the way gone.”

Many roads and bridges in the state are damaged or destroyed, said Amy Ford, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Crews are assessing the extent of the damage, which will cost “hundreds of millions” of dollars to repair, she said.

The actual number of roads damaged or destroyed is unknown, Ford said. Sections of three U.S. highways — 34, 36 and 72 — and various mountain roads are heavily damaged, she said.

Thirty highway bridges are destroyed, 20 are seriously damaged, and transportation officials suspect 20 others are damaged.

“Our first priority is looking at roads to repair,” Ford said. “We’re also looking at roadways near water that weren’t closed to make sure they are safe.”

Recovery “will take weeks, if not months,” she said.

Long-time Boulder resident Tom Kahn said there were some mudslides in his neighborhood near the base of a mountain that overlooks the city of Boulder, but his house did not suffer any major damage. Water “poured” into some nearby houses, he said.

“It’s very sad,” said Kahn, a Realtor who has lived in Boulder since 1967. “Our beautiful Boulder is hammered. Mother Nature wins.”

He said Four Mile Canyon, one of several canyons where people live outside of Boulder, is “a total wipeout.”

“Life goes on, but it’s so heartbreaking.”

Boulder resident Rudy Harburg said the most prevalent problem in the city of Boulder is flooded basements. He said the local Home Depot sold 700 sump pumps in four hours.

“I have not seen as much rain in the 55 years I have lived in Boulder,” said Harburg, who owns apartments in the city.

In front of a house on a hill above the University of Colorado campus, he said he saw people piling a couch and other furniture in front of the front door to keep water from rushing into the house.

A few days ago, a major street in Boulder, Baseline, was “a torrential river,” and Boulder Canyon, the big canyon leading into and out of the city, is “a disaster,” he said.

The Boulder Sheriff’s Office has reported that mudslides, debris and water have destroyed or made impassable mountain roads in Boulder Canyon and other canyons west of the city.

Harburg said, though, that media pictures showing extensive flood-related damage – particularly in hard-hit, nearby Lyons — are not representative of downtown Boulder. He said he has encountered roadblocks blocking some city streets, but he has usually been able to drive without obstruction through the city.

He said many college students were making the best of the situation, “dancing in the rain and running around in bikinis” on the hill above campus.

He praised city officials, because “our infrastructure — roads, storm sewers and drainage systems — has held up.”

About 14,500 people have evacuated from flooded areas in 15 counties, and 1,329 stayed overnight Saturday in 26 emergency shelters, Trost said.

Many displaced residents are staying with family or friends or in hotels, she said.

Rain fell intermittently Saturday, and 4 inches of rain were expected Sunday.

Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said Sunday he expects the weather to clear Monday morning or afternoon.

The state has “a lot of broken roads and broken bridges, but we don’t have broken spirits,” he said.

Hickenlooper said helicopters rescued more than 2,000 people in need of evacuation in flooded areas.

The size of the flood-affected area is growing.

Flooding has impacted the foothills on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains from Fort Collins in northern Colorado to Canon City, about 180 miles away in southern Colorado.

The hardest-hit counties are Boulder and Larimer in the north and El Paso in the south. The state’s two largest public universities are in the two northern counties — the University of Colorado in Boulder and Colorado State University in Larimer’s most populous city, Fort Collins.

In El Paso County, which includes Colorado Springs, the Manitou Springs area has been most affected by the flooding, Trost said.

Floodwaters have now spread east to the Great Plains in eastern Colorado. An emergency shelter has been set up in Sterling, about 102 miles east of Fort Collins and the Rocky Mountain foothills.

Want to help out Colorado flood victims? Trost says anyone wishing to send financial assistance should go to helpcoloradonow.net.

Liz Erley, chairwoman of the Lyons Community Foundation. , says anyone wishing to help Lyons residents whose homes were destroyed or damaged should send a check to the Lyons Community Foundation/Relief Fund, The Community Foundation, 1123 Spruce St., Boulder, Colo., 80302.
