22 FEBR. 2011 BAB AZIYIZA:
I salute you –
The youth of victory,
People of the nationalism,
People of challenge,
Youth of challenge,
They are a generation of anger and challenge.
I salute you. You present the world the true pictures of the Libyan people. You present the truth that the agents and cowards are trying to distort, to cover, to give a wrong picture of you before the world. Some Arab media are betraying you and depicting you as a bad people: just look at Libyans, look at Libyans! Libyans don’t want victory. They don’t want revolution. They want people in turbans and with long beards. Libyans want colonialism ! But here in the Green Square what do they want ? Libya is leading the continents of Africa, Asia and South America. Victory to the people of Libya. And this is being pointed at the Libyans.
They want no identification, identity when they say to people, Libya in Lebanon. when they say Libya, Revolution, Libya, Qaddafi, all Africa nations consider us, as the mecca, rulers of the world, even the superpowers, they want to converge on Benghazi, on Tripoli. They give their iinsults to you on Arabic media (al-Arabia and al-Jazeera), they want to insult you. We want to retrieve in the square, everywhere, Moammar Qaddafi has no rule. He’s not the President, he’s the leader of a revolution, he has nothing to Resign. Revolution means always sacrifice until the end of life. This is my country, the country of my great-grandfathers, we planted, and we watered it with our grandfather’s blood. We deserve Libya from those rats and agents, who are being paid by security persons, damn them, damn their tribes, if they have tribes, they don’t have tribes, they don’t have originality. All tribes are with us here, they (americans) can see us all chanting the same slogans. Everyone challenging, we challenge America with its mighty power, we challenge even the superpower in the world and we became victory. Here they put their heads down, Libya even kissed the grave of the Sheikh (Leader) of all Martyrs, Omar Mucktar. It’s not victory for the cities of Libya, but victory for the Libyan people. This is the victory they want to give a bad picture about. Italy, the Empire of the time, fell apart on Libyan soil. I am bigger than any job, I am a revolutionary, I am from the Bedouin, from oasis that brought victory, and enjoy it from generation to generation, Libya will remain at the top and will lead Africa and south America.
We cannot hinder the process of this revolution from these greasy rats and cats. I am paying the price for staying here, and my grandfather who fell a martyr in 1911, I will not leave the country and I will die as a martyr at the end, The remains of my father is the proof, grandfather, and my uncle Sheikh Saadi, in the cemetery of Neder, I will not leave these righteous remains. He, Saddam says that freedom cannot enjoy the shadow of these trees, we planted these trees and we watered it with our blood.
I am talking to you from the house which was bombarded by a hundred and seventy planes, by America and Britain. They left all houses and were aiming for Muammar’s house. Is it because he is president of the country? They could have treated him like other presidents, but Muammar Qaddafi is history, resistance, freedom, victory, revolution. This is an admission from the biggest power that Muammar Qaddafi is not the president, is not a normal person, you can’t poison him or lead demonstrations against him. When bombs were falling on my house, and killing my children, where were you, you rats? Where were you those with big beards? Where were you? You were in America. You were applauding your master, the Americans. One hundred and seventy planes, left all palaces and leaders and kings and came to the great house of Muammar Qaddafi. This is a victory we should not be relinquished by anybody, any country or people, in myself Africa or any mission fighting back the tyranny of the America, we did not give in, we were resilient, here.
Now, group few people, of youth, who were given tablets, hallucination pills, raiding police stations here and there like rats, they raided a barracks, so we have security and relative safety and security. They used this security and this safety that Libya was enjoying, and they raided some barracks and they also banned their previous criminal records, but they have no, I don’t blame them these youths. They are young people, sixteen, seventeen. They are emanating what’s happening in Tunisia. And they are imitating what’s happening in some cities, like in they heard something about raid on a courts building, they say we shall do it in our city, but there is a group that appear they are sick, in a group giving money and tablets, these hallucination tablets, to these young people, very young people, pushing them towards this side war.
The people who were killed are members of the police, and armed forces, but not those who were behind them. They are in their houses, outside of the country, enjoying the safety and their families and children. And they are encouraging you, your children, giving them people so they can be killed, and we start slaughtering each other, encouraging them to slaughter each other.
At the Fatah Yousuf Younis there was a, was under my command when we, in the revolution, and freed Benghazi when Abdul Fatah entered Benghazi was under my command, twenty thousand people from Sietal al-Satana, under the Italian, al-Buktana was occupied by the American forces, Tobrouk was under complete American control, when we entered Benghazi to create unity because the barracks when I told al-Buktar when I ask him to attack, to overtake the radio in Benghazi.
Weifel hospital and nobody dared to change the name, where were you and your grandparents, you mercenaries, when there were five American bases, who of you would dare to do such a thing. We entered a war against America and Britain on Libyan soil. If their forces don’t leave, the fight will carry on, will continue. You think it’s easy, we paid a price for Libya, it has a victory, it will be reckoned with.
We left the Rule to the Libyan people. We do not have any authority, we do not issue any (order/decree), we left the rule to the Libyan people. It is the Libyan people who are responsible, all of them. In the hospitals, in the schools, in the departments, in agriculture, in everywhere. The struggle for power has been resolved. My officials, when Africa raided us, we fought the French in the south and we fought Sadat (Egyptian President) as well, and Haile Selassie (Emperor of Ethopia), we fought him. Even Bourguiba (Algerian Presdient), and we fought him. All agents of the colonial masters, we fought them, and left everything for you. Even the money for petrol, I ask you to take every month, we said no. Leave the money, revenue for petrol with the government. You are responsible for the People’s Committees. I call on the Libyan people to form new municipalities as was mentioned by Saif-al-Islam (Qaddafi’s Eldest son), the program mentioned by Saif-al-Islam, Redata, who because of that was shot at. They ask him, why did you come to Benghazi? On the day of the revolution, why did you come? Where were you, when Abdul Fatah holding his arm, fighting for the revolution, when he was come the borders fighting Sadat and Israel? Al-Fatah was the leader, the champion of the war on the borders. He was shot by an unidentified person. Is this the gratitude? Who are they? This is not the people of Benghazi. We talked about the People’s Committees in Redat and in Durna. I know Bani Walid does not want to join Redata. We can capable of running their own People’s Committees these areas. Not relying on anybody else but themselves. Tripoli was the front rail of Libya, when the Italians were in the south. I know it does not want to be joined. with Salat or with the Humus. The Torna, they can establish their own Committee, and be free as well.
And I’m sure after this call, people tomorrow will call for new committees. Will reach the number of thirty. The municipality will be more than fifty and will reach one hundred and fifty, and everyone will have their own municipality. These ones who serve us, and serve our history. These people, it’s not those who carry the arms like the RBG. Young people are given the armored vehicles to go in Benghazi. They were put. Families should to collect their children, get out of their homes. If you love Moummar Qaddafi, children, men, women, with Moummar al-Qadafii something, for victory.
To be at the top, who wants victory, must remember when the American, the Italian, and the British left, and when oil came back into the ownership of the people. Now 90% of it belong to the people, only 10% of it to the American companies. Get out of your homes, to the streets, secure the streets, take the rats, the greasy rats out of the streets. We did not choose(? or shoot?) the youth so far, force is behind the Libyan people. If we have to use force, then we shall use it. According to the international law, and according to the Libyan constitution. Tomorrow, even from tonight, these people who leave Moummar Qaddafi, if I was the president I would have thrown my resignation at your face, but I do not have that power or position. I will fight until the last drop of my blood. With the Libyan people behind me. You are a solid rock, that was bitten by the American aggression. Take your children from the streets. They took your children away from you. Your children are dying. For what reason? For what purpose? For nothing, but to burn Libya. Libyan peace died.
Your children died. But their children are in America, and in Europe. What is this scare of these gangs? Gangs, like rats, means nothing. One in a million from the Libyan people, it can do nothing. They were given these tablets, like in tea, imitating, they were just imitating the people in Tunisia and Egypt. Tomorrow the hope lies with the people and security. All barricades should be lifted. Follow them. Get out of your homes. Chase them. You want Benghazi to be destructed? Cut off from electricity and water? These rats can reach the oil fields and blow it. Benghazi I built it block by block, and we are still building it. And they are come to destroy it, by using your children.
Three tanks were burned, that turned into. Even civilian planes stopped using Benghazi, they have stopped using Benghazi airport. They are worried in case of these rats attack them. Darmah (Libyan City) has became a rebel. a Qalander (a Madman). Beware that al-Zawahiri (Bin-Laden’s Deputy) will come and rule you. Do you want Americans to come and occupy you? Like Afghanistan and Pakistan and Iraq? Our country will become like Afghanistan if that’s what you want. Go out to the streets. Chase them. Take away their arms from them. And arrest them, and prosecute them. Hand them to security. Only few of them. It’s a bunch of terrorists. Turning into Emirates of al-Zawahiri (Bin Laden’s Deputy). What in Afghanistan has caused North Americans to have dropped bombs on it?
All free officers have been distributed to the tribal areas, try to cleanse these people and arrest those responsible who they will be prosecuted. And that will be their punishment. They do not want me, they do not want Libya. This is the criminal act. Anybody who lifts an arm, any Libyan who lifts an arm shall be punished with death sentence. Those who spy with other countries shall be punished with death sentence. Anybody who undermines the sovereignty of the state shall be punished with death. Who handles ministrations or munitions. And they do not blame Osama bin Ladin, those who submit shall be punished by death. Those who commit crime against the army. Anybody who shall be handed the death sentence who works for foreign country, that undermines the defense of the country. We are not blaming the youth,
and when they are caught and prosecuted they will be begging for mercy, and this time we will not be so merciful, we will not be forgiving. Any who undermines the constitution, anyone, by force, or otherwise, to undermine and change by force or any other way, and the punishment is death. Any who use explosives shall be punished with death. Any who use bombs or…
Please, please remain quiet. Be quiet so you can hear. This is a very dangerous… I have not even started to give orders to use bullets. Any use of force against the authority of the state, anyone causing murder shall be handed the death sentence. All these punishable by death, all these I mentioned. Civil war, anyone cause or act leads to civil war, and these acts, lead to civil war. Nobody can wear out. You want it to be like Somalia? This will lead to civil war, if you do not apprehend them.
Civil war, anybody who is caught and condemned to cause, to undermine the unity of the country. Guilty in the Duma. I ask him to leave, he refused. We are not leaving the building. They brought tanks, and on live TV, Yeltsin, they hit the Duma building and they left like rats. And the west did not raise a voice. These members of parliament, of the Duma, did not have any arms. Children in Peking, in the square, were. Peking brought the tanks, and those who were in front were crushed to death. And whoever died, the unity of China is more important than those people in the square. Tianamen Square. The unity of the Russian Federation was more important than those in the building. The Davidian cult, they were also, they send them the tear gas, and also the armored vehicles, and those who also took over the, al-Zawahiri, who is a follower of Bin Ladin, when they took over Fallujah. America flattened Fallujah from the air, fighting terrorism. We are looking for al-Zawahiri in Fallujah. We must destroy, bombard it from the air. Nobody can be critical of what they did. Baghdad was destroyed, so many civilians died. When wedding ceremonies were shot at, thinking illegal gatherings, two, three million died in Baghdad so we can get rid of terrorism, eliminate Baath party, get rid of Al-Qaeda. Nobody condemned the Israelis. They said we have the right to self-defense. From air, from sea, from sea and from land. Tanks entered the city, killing as they wanted. Do you know what is happening in Somalia? Do you want your country to be like Somalia and like Iraq as well? Same groups who caused the destruction of this country, is doing what they did, they want to be like Fallujah.
Same gangs. Same group. So tonight, the youth, all the youths, not those rats who have taken the tablets, all the youths tomorrow form security committees from tonight, they put green with red writing secure the cities, to bring back security to the cities. They are attacking us. Until the security personnel come back and establish security once again, they will go back to their tribes. It’s the people of the tribes will help them, not the agents of the Americans, or of Bin Ladin, or Zaqawi. Your children from tomorrow, the youth, not those youths… if they were handed to the authorities so we can rehabilitate them and make them more effective, as a community. People, men and women should take over the streets, lead the revolution from one end to another.
I am the head of the people’s revolution. It’s taking security, establishing security, respecting authority, people’s authority. Get out of your houses as of now, and the youth should be organized to join the committees. Tomorrow the youth should be, all cities, Libyan cities, should wear these pants on their arms, committees defending the achievements that cost 51.8€, and the committees should be formed to defend the achievement of the revolution, and the security, local security. And those Imams who know about the Koran, the youth, the real Caliphate (Islamic Government), tomorrow should form to defend the community values, and everyone should feel free walking the streets in safety, heads held high, without being teased. People are living in hell. Start from tonight, apprehend them from now. Come tomorrow I think a new administration will be formed, new municipalities, new people’s authorities. And the issues were raised by Saif-al-Islam (Sucessor) that will be delivered to him, and the judges and lawyers and the relation to constitutional forms, I have no, I want to use any situation, legal authority. We want the law to prevail, the authority of the people. I do not have money, I do not have a palace. I want everything I have for the Libyan people, and preserve its oil reserves, and live with dignity. Be brave. You outnumber them millions. You are millions and they are tens. Open the airports and deport. Bring back security. Now you have the free officers who can help you. And you can decide as well, decide the distribution of wealth. The Libyan oil should be distributed to all people. You can take it and do whatever you want with it.
I shall not take it. His share. Take your share, and you can do whatever you like with it. I think also Saif-al-Islam will meet in the embassy buildings, and the media, and every company. Our brothers who betrayed us, instead of relaying the truth, they giving pictures that are so many years old. The Libyan radio media will be saying through these dirty stations, and see what the response will be from the Libyan media. Airports are closed, seaports, are not working, radios are not working. One terrorist who is dangerous, they could not apprehend him after a while. It’s a person who committed, shooting from one school to another and they couldn’t apprehend him. This is only very few who terrorize Benghazi.
Peaceful demonstrations that talked by the Dewal, about Gaza, peaceful demonstrations about Iraq. We can resort to the people’s committees. They have the Committee Conference, the People’s Committee Conferences (Congresses), they have the money, we have to resolve our differences there. I myself led peaceful demonstrations lately. The old regime, but I did not seek destruction. I am against the bombing, causing explosions in Algeria. Peaceful demonstrations is different. And the undermining of the social structure is a different matter. The world must understand peaceful demonstration is different. Libyan people do not need to resort to demonstrations, they can go to the People’s Committee. But armed rebellion are to disconnect the airports or Benghazi are a different matter, we will not allow it. Rebellion in the Russian parliament was dealt with by tanks, and the Davidian cults (a Protestant offshoot) in Waco (a town in America) were dealt with by armored vehicles. The uprising in Fallujah (town in Iraq) was dealt with by air bombardment. Because there was an armed uprising. Even those unarmed incidents in Waco and parliament were dealt with by force. When the students in Tianamen Square, again the tanks were sent to deal with them. It’s not a joke, they would rather do whatever it takes in order not to allow part of the country be taken away. Peaceful demonstration is different. Peaceful demonstration is something, and talking to foreign country, to conspire against the country is a different matter. But conspiring with foreign government is a totally different issue. We brothers know each other.
We could have traitors in… Those who stepped on the Union Jack flag, calling them traitors… We will rehabilitate them, teach them, become technicians, teachers…
Translator: The Libyan leader is quoting a poetic line about somebody from Zintan, that is not meant to be, Youth of the… Nobody, people, sorry the youth was taken from their families and given these hallucination tablets. The punishment should be hanging for those who give it to, not the people who use these tablets. And found out they are still shouting the slogans of the revolution, raise up your heads brothers. The sons and grandsons of the battles for liberation. The guardians of our hero Omar Al-Mucktar(Libyan Freedom fighter in early 1900s), they guard his grave and his principles.
Wherever we go I will be guarded by those young men and women, and I’ll have a chance, it will give me an opportunity to talk to them and I will find out, and I shall be able to convince them. This young people’s revolution is our revolution, it’s our people’s revolution. These radio and televisions that have been abusing the events inside the Jamahiriya Libyan lands, like the American states, or German states for that matter. We know each other by name. We know this intent, that area, the sons of Isaiah, Tahoun, Gazim and other tribes, the Had Mohamed, the late. Had he been alive, these things would not have happened I would have called him and told him
If you were with me yesterday, and then the Arabs, and the Belgazi, what did they say, what happened to them, they should come out. Were you from Mariam, or Sizaid, or any other tribe, we know each other. We see everybody, from one tribe or another. Honestly. You are Erbawana, or Shaib, we know each other. Who in the world would know each other as well as us? We kill each other. Mushir Shalab, the hero of the Musharak battle, battles of the ? from Rejidah, how can we ignore all this history? It is impossible. Are you from Shafur, the mother of all tribes, are you from Shaliya, we know each other.
If we go to El-Hasa, we say to them, are you Shabarga? Everything I’ve said just now, look at your Arab brothers, they have distorted, one of the satellite channels says I
have issued orders to arrest the rebels. Can you imagine? Have I asked anything like that? I have asked the crowds, the children, the people who led them, but when Libya is in danger, and its unity is in danger, and Al-Qaeda. Even the security council, the use of force, but ordinary arrests, now we should come out to men and women, the security of towns, cities and oases, should come out now. Admitted they were rebels, before they were demonstrators. Are there demonstrations in Libya? All the demonstrations are supporting us.
What’s required is giving up all the weapons that terrorize people. Benghazi is dying, is terrorized. Old and young they are dying, no water, no electricity, nothing. Benghazi you should save yourselves, you should come out, and set up the Fatah Hapri, who set Benghazi free on the eve of the revolution. Agree with him to run the affairs of the city until the police comes back to it, and for the new municipalities, and for the new assemblies, and the new conferences, and the new congresses, tomorrow we shall start. He will help you, set him free, shame on you, are you gangsters? It’s impossible! Surrendering, giving up all weapons, to the authorities, from which they have been taken, or we will have massacres. Drugged and young people who have got machine guns, setting the prisoners free. Arresting the troublemakers and giving them over to the security people so that they can be taught a lesson, give up the drugs they have been taking, because they are very harmful, they are very harmful to the heart.
Of all the obstacles of life in the streets, shops should be open, airports should open, and harbors should open, do not destroy your country for no reason. What is the reason for that? What has come over you? Shame on you. We were living in safety, security, prosperity. We are having our oil, our water, in peace and happiness. That we burn our country down.
Now I want to tell you, finally, it’s impossible for anybody who is sensible to allow, for the country to be torn apart, or to fall into the hands of crazy people. I’ve just been informed that the poetry I just mentioned, about the dam, apparently for some reason they haven’t heard, and forgive me for repeating it. Because there was a technical fault, and they did not hear it.
I said one was more friendly, oh a youth who insulted somebody else, and then got annoyed and blamed it all on the tribe as a whole. These few are no friends to you, and then he wrote a poem about it. The from a tribe replied, say a mistake made by a young man from the preparatory school who doesn’t know any history, and then the young man, preparatory school doesn’t know anything about history, like the other people do not the people, do not know anything, do not know the Kardom battle, the late Mohamed who faced problems.
They said to him forgive us. I do not blame this on the heroes. This is a mistake made by a young chap from a preparatory school who doesn’ know history, unintended, and it’s not our fault. Crazy people from the Bengazi, they just a misled people, and then they asked me not to repeat this poetry because some people did not hear it. Just an unwise, bring them over to me, I wish you could, all those young people who are revolting. I’s really, is it possible for young people to destroy the country, the country of the masses?
To follow the agents of the foreign intelligence and those fundamentalists? Who would believe this? Nobody could. It’s impossible for our youth to be led by somebody else. If they are not following Qaddafi, who would they follow? Somebody with a beard? Impossible, the people are with us, supporting us, these are our people, I’ve brought them up. Everywhere they are shouting slogans in support of Mu’ammar al-Qathafi.

The Nomadic Tuareg tribes of the coast, living closer to the Mediterranean coast, as they migrate north from Ghadames throughout the entire Nafusa Green Mountains ranges. Here their language is known as Tamazight.
Tamazight is now a proud language taught in Amazigh schools:
The dialect they speak is already one of the ancient Arabic dialects.
“Cole Tmashek“ is the term for the people who speaks Tamashek.
These are a proud people, with cultural ties to all of North-Western-African people. Here like all Malkite Muslim, the Tuareg offer libations of dates to tombs of important marabouts and saints in order to obtain the al-baraka benediction. Beliefs about the afterlife (e.g., paradise) conform closely to those of official Malkite Islam. (This is where they differ from Southern Taureg tribes.)
The Tuareg distinguished themselves from other Berbers during their ancient times in Amazigh by preserving the dialect of Tamazight “Hackler” and they write their letters “Tifinagh” from right to left and from top to bottom and vice versa. Tifinagh (also called Shifinagh and Tifinar) is Tuareg Tamajaq writing system. The origins of “Tifinagh” remain unclear. An old version of Tifinagh, also known as Libyco-Berber, dates to between the 3rd century BC and the 3rd century AD in northwestern Africa (Gaudio, 1993).

The Tuareg’s Tifinagh alphabet is composed of simple geometrical signs, it contains 21 to 27 signs, and are used according to the region. The Tifinagh language is written by tradition on stones, trunks and in the sand and is very difficult to read.
In sthe South-Western Green Mountains, is the city of Ghadames in Libya at the confluence of the borders with Tunisia and Algeria. Here lie the tribes named Cole Hgar, and Cole Aaajer in the deserts of Algeria.
Historically, the Tuareg were recorded by the Greek historian Herodotus in the 5th Century BC in his travelogue during his travels to ancient Egypt and some parts of North Africa.
Ibn Battuta in his writings about his famous trips in Africa had this to say about the Tuareg: “They are Morabiteen state assets, and generally belong to the majority of the Touareg tribes Sanhaja.” Ibn Khaldun called the Tuareg masked people and like all Arab historians he classified them in the second layer of the “Sanhaja” In his words there are of many areas including “Kazolah”, “Lamtonah”, “Misratah” , “Laamtah” and “Rikah “.

In the 1980s rebel fighters founded Tinariwen, a Tuareg band that fuses electric guitars and indigenous musical styles. Tinariwen is one of the best known and authentic Tuareg bands. Especially in areas that were cut off during the Tuareg rebellion (e.g., Adrar des Iforas), they were practically the only music available, which made them locally famous and their songs/lyrics (e.g. Abaraybone, …) are well known by the locals.
They released their first CD in 2000, and toured in Europe and the United States in 2004.
Tuareg guitar groups that followed in their path include Group Inerane and Group Bombino.

In The Ottoman Empire the Tuareg were called Tevarikler, however, the Tuaregs call themselves Imuhagh, or Imushagh (cognate to the northern Amazigh Imazighen). Imuhagh is translated as ‘free men,” referring to the Tuareg “nobility”, to the exclusion of the artisan client castes and slaves. The term for a Tuareg man is Amajagh (var. Amashegh, Amahagh), the term for a woman Tamajaq (var. Tamasheq, Tamahaq, Timajaghen).

The spelling variants given reflect the variety of the Tuareg dialects, but they all reflect the same linguistic root. Some Tuaregs preferred to be called Limajgn or Temasheq; and were akin to Amazigh, meaning free men,
they became a hybrid by combining in their blood with several races such as Targi, Arabic and Africans, due to the living with the Arabs in the north and with the black Africans in the South.

They Tuareg known internationally by their popular name “the Blue Men of the Sahara,” “The Masked people” or “Men of the Veil,” because of the indigo colour of the veils and other clothing which their men wear, which sometimes stains the skin underneath. The men only wear this cloth and not the women. Men begin wearing a veil at the age 25.

The men wear loose sleeves with embroidered pocket, and often possess a dagger or sword. The sword hilt is studded with silver and gold, precious stones and carved by the names of its owners.
Health care among Tuareg today includes traditional herbal, Quranic, and ritual therapies, as well as Western medicine. Traditional medicine is more prevalent in rural communities because of geographic barriers and political tensions. Although local residents desire Western medicines, most Western-trained personnel tend to be non-Tuareg, and many Tuareg are suspicious or shy of outside medical practitioners (Rasmussen 1994). Therefore rural peoples tend to rely most upon traditional practitioners and remedies.
For example, Quranic scholars cure predominantly men with verses from the Quran and some psychological counseling techniques. Female herbalists cure predominantly women and children with leaves, roots, barks, and some holisitic techniques such as verbal incantations and laying on of hands. Practitioners called bokawa (a Hausa term; sing. boka ) cure with perfumes and other non-Quranic methods. In addition, spirit possession is cured by drummers.

Filipinos Catholics, heroic witnesses in Libya
“When the war is over, the work of Catholics will remain one of the most heroic pages of the Church in Libya,” said Mgr Martinelli. Despite the war, more than 2,000 Filipino nurses and doctors have remained in the country to serve the population.
Tripoli (AsiaNews) – “When the war is over, the work of Catholics will remain one of the most heroic pages of the Church in Libya,” said Mgr Giovanni Innocenzo Martinelli, apostolic vicar of Tripoli. Speaking to AsiaNews, he praised the “precious work” of more than 2,000 Filipino Catholics employed in local hospitals who have remained in the country to help the population.
“After NATO bombing started, most migrants lost their job and fled,” the prelate said. “Those who stayed behind have had to face enormous difficulties.”
Fuel is regularly in shortage supply in the main cities of eastern Libya (Tripolitania), Mgr Martinelli said. People have to join long line-ups to get bread and basic necessities.
“Filipino nurses and doctors chose to remain, not for money, but to serve the people of Libya and the Church,” he explained. “They face the hardships of war with courage and a sense of responsibility.”
Many Sub-Saharan migrants, mostly construction workers, also chose to stay. They have shown a great deal of courage, the bishop explained. “These people are giving their time and life for the Church and are a sign of hope for Libyans.”
Muammar al-Qathafi built two Roman Catholic churches especially for these Philipino medics..
- Del Rosario said one Filipino nursing professor teaching in a university in Benghazi said that they were asked to stay and would be paid their wages even if there are no classes. Another admitted that she could not readily give up a salary ranging between 4,500 and 6,000 Libyan dinars, or 160,000 pesos (Dh13,261) to 200,000 pesos (Dh17,000), roughly the equivalent of pay received by vice-presidents of multi-national corporations in the Philippines.
He said of 2,000 nurses with dependents in Libya, around 1,600 had decided to stay.
Eight hundred of these nurses and dependents are in Tripoli.
The department says 1,600 of 2,000 Filipino nurses have decided to stay in Libya along with around 100 Filipino professors. It says many of the workers prefer to stay in Libya, where they have been promised higher wages amid the violence there, rather than face unemployment at home.
Many Filipinos chose to stay back
“I think we’re safe here,” says one nurse. “Our employer promised to take care of us and told us that if worse comes to worst, we will be housed in the hospital and provided with everything we need for free, on top of salary increase.”
Another admits that she would not readily give up her salary ranging between 4,500 to 6,000 Libyan dinar, equivalent to about 3,000 euros.
Even qualified Filipino doctors chose to become nurses in LIBYA to earn higher wages
Most Filipinos have been promised an increase in their salaries for staying, while others have been told they would lose entitlement to gratuity pay equivalent to one full month’s salary if they do not finish their contracts.
“Many want to go home, but they preferred to stay in Libya because there are no job opportunities in the Philippines,” one of the Filipino leaders told Secretary Del Rosario at a meeting in the Philippine Embassy in Tripoli.
More than the air strikes on different parts of Libya, the Filipino workers there are concerned about problems with remitting money to their families and have asked how the government could help them in their remittances. Secretary Del Rosario has promised to put a mechanism in place for sending remittances through the Philippine Embassy.

The name Tuareg is an Arabic term meaning “abandoned by God,” “ways” or “paths taken”. According to some researchers – the word Touareg is taken from the word “Tareka”/”Targa” a valley in the region of Fezzan in Libya. By the borrowing of the word from the Northwest region, the southern Taureg came to be known by this same name because of the liking for oasis and the aeragated lands, by extension of the concept of “arable land, garden”. It designated the Wadi al-Haya area between Sabha and Ubari and is rendered in Arabic as bilad al-khayr “good land”.

Tuareg has been, until recently, experts familiar with the sub-Saharan pathways by helping the movement of convoys. They do these through their time-honored patience, courage and knowledge of the whereabouts of the water as well their command the stars that guides them. Talemt (Ursa Major), the she-camel

Further South in the arid Southwest of Libya and into Algeria and further South-West into Mali, their language ia called Tamajaq (also called Tamasheq or Tamahaq, according to the region where it is spoken), which appears to have several dialects spoken in different regions (Greenberg, 1970). The language is called Tamasheq by western Tuareg in Mali, Tamahaq among Algerian and Libyan Tuareg, and Tamajaq in the Azawagh and Aïr regions, Niger.
The Tuaregs live in five principal north-western African countries, particularly in southern Algeria, southwestern Libya, Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. Fewer numbers Chad and Nigeria. The population distribution of Tuaregs is quite scanty, however, the unofficial estimates suggest that their total number in the region of approximately 4.5 million. Out of this sum, 85% of them resides in Mali and Niger and the rest between Algeria and Libya. And from the same estimates, they make up from 10% to 20% of the total population of Niger and Mali.
The population of the Libyan Tuaregs is approximately 10,000 Ajjer Tuaregs. About 8,000 Ajjer live along the Algerian border while the rest (2,000) settles in the Oasis of Ghat in the south west of Libya Prasse (Ibid) and Migdalovitz (1989). Tuaregs live in desert areas stretching from the south, Libya to northern Mali, in the Fezzan region of Libya; they are located in the Hoggar region of Algeria Veugdon. In Mali, there are provinces of the Touareg and Ozoad Adgag, but their presence in Niger is mainly in the region of Ayer.

In desert terms, the Tuareg people inhabit a large area, covering almost all the middle and western Sahara and the north-central Sahel. In Tuareg terms, the Sahara is not one desert but many, so they call it Tinariwen (“the Deserts”). Among the many deserts in Africa, there is the true desert Ténéré. Other deserts are more and less arid, flat and mountainous: Adrar, Tagant, Tawat (Touat) Tanezrouft, Adghagh n Fughas, Tamasna, Azawagh, Adar, Damargu, Tagama, Manga, Ayr, Tarramit (Termit), Kawar, Djado, Tadmait, Admer, Igharghar, Ahaggar, Tassili n’Ajjer, Tadrart, Idhan, Tanghart, Fezzan, Tibesti, Kalansho, Libyan Desert, etc.
Tuareg often also claim ownership over these lands and over the crop and property…hence the conflicts
in the agricultural bed of the Great Man-made River.
Tuareg merchants were responsible for bringing goods from these cities to the north. From there they were distributed throughout the world. Because of the nature of transport and the limited space available in caravans, Tuareg usually traded in luxury items, things which took up little space and on which a large profit could be made.

The Life of a Tuareg Artisan
Extract from a work in progress by Andy Morgan
The artisan made almost everything that was necessary for daily life and survival in the desert; tents, bags, saddles, swords, pottery, padlocks, keys, shields, lances, beds, musical instruments and, of course, jewellery. But his usefulness extended beyond that of a craftsman, a maker of objects. In fact, if you list every role ever attributed to the artisan class, you end up with an extraordinary array of trades and skills; jeweller, saddle-maker, leather-worker, carpenter, sword-maker, cobbler, potter, bead-maker, tanner, mat maker, teacher, historian, musician, nuptial negotiator or matchmaker, wedding organiser, midwife, messenger, diplomat, adviser, general repairman, knife-sharpener, circumciser, cattle-brander, hairdresser, surgeon, dentist, doctor, vet, apothecary…even magician!
Of course, no single artisan ever performed all these roles. To begin with, some of them were reserved for female artisans or tinedan, notably tent making, leatherworking and bead making. And there was also a hierarchy of activity within the artisan class itself. Jewellers were considered to be the masters, below them came the potters, then the woodworkers and so on. But it was not uncommon for a master jeweller to also be called on to fix a broken sword or saddle, pull a tooth, circumcise a young boy, take part in the negotiation of a wedding between the offspring of two noble families, or play music and recite epic poetry at some grand feast or event.
Boys usually start their apprenticeship at around the age of seven, working the bellows while their fathers, uncles and elder brothers melt down and fashion the medial, tidying up around the workshop, making tea. After a few years the apprentice might be allowed to finish off a cross or a bangle, or make a very simple ring or earring. Gradually, after about fifteen years gradually ascending the hierarchy of skills he becomes a master artisan.
The artisans even had their own special language called Ténet. Nicolaisen concludes that Ténet is an invented language, like cockney rhyming-slang or Parisian verlan (backslang), which gave the artisans the means to communicate secretly in the presence of non-artisans, thus increasing their chances of boosting business and surviving. Most of the time the artisans spoke Tamashek, even when amongst their own family. Ténet seems to have been only an supplementary form of linguistic ‘armour’. Strangely, Gabus makes no mention of Ténet at all, stating merely that the artisans generally spoke too much, with lax manners of speech….
The nomadic artisan would live in the camp of a noble, vassal or marabout, travelling with them from pasture to pasture which his own family. They would make a huge number of goods and provide other services to their lord in return for protection, food, millet, milk, sugar, tea and clothing. He would also work for inhabitants of other camps in the vicinity, always in exchange for food and goods rather than money. His collection of tools was perforce small and easily portable from place to place. Gabus lists the usual barter price for different jewels, according to an artisan from the Hoggar region of southern Algeria:
A tchérot amulet pendant = 1 young camel
Two rings = one kid goat
A small padlock = one goat
A large padlock = two goats
A dagine style bracelet = two goats
A veil weight / padlock key = one goat
The origins and character of the artisan blacksmith by Andy Morgan:
The origin of Tuaregs who had gain the character of «Lords of desert» due to their persistent ability
to confront and challenge the circumstances of geography and harsh climate is shrouded in mystery.
No one knows the true origin of the Tuareg, where they came from or when they arrived in the Sahara.
There are many schools of thought about the origins of the Tuareg. Geneticly, the only certainty
we have is that their roots are not sub-Sharan, as they carry the Neanderthal gene which native Aficans sub-sahara totally lack.
Touareg people of Mali.
The artisans themselves have their own set of poetic origin myths. They claim that their tools, especially their hammer, tongs and anvil were handed down to them by Father Adam and the Prophet David or Sidna Daouda taught them the dark art of iron smelting, and other less problematic skills like stone-cutting, moulding and engraving.
Other non-artisan members of desert society recount less charitable legends about the origins of the Kel Inedan. The great Jean Gabus was told the story that one day the Prophet Mohammed was bathing, and some children happened to see him. One of them mocked the Prophet and that wayward youth was the ancestor of the artisans. Another story he heard tells how the angel Gabriel asked Eve to show him her children so that they could be blessed. Eve dutifully brought out all her offspring except one, whom she hid away from the angel’s beatific gaze. That child was the ancestor of all artisans. In Mauretania, Gabus was also informed that the artisans took lessons in magic from the Ehel Belhamar or ‘People of the Devil’ so that they could protect themselves from the evil influence of the metals with which they were obliged to work.
Academics have searched for metaphorical truth in these myths and legends and some have come to the conclusion that the figure of Saint David proves the theory that the artisans are descended from Jewish jewellers from the Souss and Drâa valleys in the southern Atlas mountains or the Touat and M’zab regions north of Tamanrasset, all of which did have sizeable Jewish populations in the middle ages. It seems almost certain that some desert clans or tribes do have Jewish origins, notably the Kel Gress and the Daoussak (‘Sons of Issac’), and it must also be remembered that the whole of North Africa has ancient roots in Jewish culture, thanks to the Phoenicians and later cultures from the Levant who colonized most of the Mediterranean littoral before and during the days of the Roman empire.
Artisan at Assoc. Assaghan
However, the theory that all Touareg artisans are descended from Jews who came down from the north is tenuous. What is most striking about many Inedan is their Negroid appearance, or rather, their completely distinct physiognomy, in which Negroid traces are often very clear. A Touareg can identify an artisan merely from his facial features, even if he comes from a region thousands of miles away across the desert. This has lead to speculation that the Inedan are descended from an ancient black race who lived in the desert before the Berber tribes of the north came south and who were subsequently subdued and forced to work for their new ‘whiter’ overlords.
At times the assertion that the craftsmen who make such beautiful and sophisticated jewellery could only be descended from Jews or maybe Arab jewellers who came to the desert from Cairo and Baghdad in the early middle ages, smacks of mild racism and a reprehensible disbelief that such artistry can have its roots in black Africa itself. But if you consider the extremely sophisticated societies that existed in sub-Saharan West Africa, from the end of the Roman Empire right through to the 17th century, such as the Ghana, Mali and Songhai Empires, all famously rich in gold, as well as the extraordinary bronzes that were produced over 900 years ago in the Yoruban city of Ifé, in modern day Benin, using precisely the same lost wax technique that the Touareg artisans employ to make their famous crosses, then it seems perfectly possible that the source of the artisan’s craft lies to the south, rather than to the north.
Helen Hagan champions yet another origin theory, which holds that the Inedan’s ancestors came from the Egypt, Nubia and Ethiopia in the east, that they had a red ochreish skin colour and that they were conquered by the fairer-skinned imajeren. It’s true that some Touareg bear a striking resemblance to native Americans, and that they are often referred to by their southern black neighbours as les peaux rouges, ‘the redskins’, but once again this theory is tenuous.
The fact is that all artisan origin theories are tenuous, and will probably remain so until same serious DNA ancestry-tracing work is done in the region. Despite the ‘closed’ endogamous nature of the artisan clan, I prefer to believe that a variety of different racial and cultural traits are bundled together in the modern-day Inedan. No doubt the skill and knowledge of Jewish jewellers from the Anti-Atlas and the Algerian plateaux did filter further south gradually over the centuries, no doubt grandees who travelled to the Sahara from Cairo, Jerusalem and Baghdad brought their own artisans with them, no doubt Berber craftsmen from the North travelled south in baggage trains of successive military conquerors, no doubt there were already considerable metal working skills amongst the black peoples of the Niger Rivers and since the Peulh or Fulani people who populate the whole of West Africa almost certainly came originally from what is now The Sudan and Ethiopia, there was probably a major influence from that region as well. What we probably have in the Touareg artisan of today is a mongrel racial and cultural mixture that has been created over centuries of Saharan interchange or brassage, as the French say.
Some further clues about the origins of the Kel Inedan can be wrung from the attitudes of Touareg society towards the artisan caste.
Kel Inedan – the masters of fire
The episode illustrates a very strange symbiotic relationship between the artisans and other Touareg. The majority image of the artisan mixes disdain, mistrust, fear with a kind of respect and dependency. If the artisan is descended from a conquered clan of aboriginal inhabitants who lived in the Sahara before the arrival of the Berber tribes from the north, then the disdain that Touareg society feels towards him is perhaps an echo of the original hauteur that the victor felt toward the vanquished. Perhaps their mistrust can be attributed to that universal contempt which dominant social groups feel towards subservient ones, especially if they are racially different and ‘closed’. Maybe this antipathy is also attributable to the natural arrogance of the warrior nobility towards those who depend on their manual labour for their livelihood. And perhaps the fear comes from a superstitious wonder at the ‘magic’ of metalworking, the fiery transformation of base raw materials that were once locked up inside soil and rocks into wondrous jewels, swords and other objects, using processes that are deeply entwined with very ancient, possibly animist, religious beliefs. One can almost picture the Berber lord shuddering, proud in his racial, cultural and religious superiority, as he looked down on the black animist metal-worker coaxing some wondrous object out of the primordial fire using mysterious and opaque gris-gris and evoking the names ancient and unknowable spirits. After all, this terror of those who work with fire, who mould and sublimate nature itself, is common amongst many early or pre-industrial societies.
But it’s the respect and licence given to the artisan, which makes their relationship with the rest of Touareg society so strange, even unique. Gabus recounts how artisans sometimes became the trusted friends and advisors of clan chiefs or other noble persons, and how they were often asked to go on delicate diplomatic missions, or to negotiate the bride price and dowry for an important wedding. Like the court-jesters of medieval Europe, the artisan was given much freer licence to express his own opinions in the presence of the rich and powerful than other members of society.
Paradoxically, the artisans were also deemed to be wise and knowledgeable, especially when it came to tribal and clan history or the useful properties of the natural world. They were respected for their extraordinary ability to produce all the good necessary for life in the desert, and their wide range of their skills and know-how. They were often prized for their loyalty and friendship. The very fact that they were not of a noble caste, and were therefore excluded from the politics and power-struggles of tribes and clans probably made their friendship less ‘dangerous’ and more secure than that of other clan members.
Like their counterparts south of the Niger, the griots of Manding, Songhai and Bamana society, the artisans were the repositories of society’s oral history and were excellent musicians. Nicolaisen tells how many noble Touareg despised and shunned Inedan for much of the time, except at weddings, feasts and ceremonies when the artisans were called on to sing and recite poetry and thereby oil the social machinery. Furthermore it was considered bad form to loose one’s temper with an artisan or his provocative words and extremely dishonourable to hit or wound one. In some ways, the artisan’s freedom to speak his mind was useful in as much as it could deflate potential conflict, thereby maintaining harmony and strengthening the equilibrium of the clan. And this free speech was more often that not softened and nuanced by a high degree of humour and hilarity. The comic genius of the Touareg is something that is very often ignored or overlooked by outsiders who fail to see beyond their characteristic haughtiness and reserve.
Gabus also claims that the artisans themselves were fully aware of and accepting of their own unique place in society. “An artisan who never asks for what he wants, or tries to get it, is worthless,” Gabus was told by an artisan. In other words, it was all about give and take. The artisan played a game of survival with his Touareg neighbours, providing them with their necessities, but remaining apart on an equal-but-different footing, accepting taunts and jibes in return for custom and grudging respect, earning the most he could for himself and his family with his keen sense of opportunity, his acute bargaining skills and his nose for a good deal.
Men were expected to wear jewellery in a sober and dignified fashion, especially if they were nobles. A silver, or silver and brass tchérot pendant around the neck and a few others adorning their tagelmoust or turban in addition or a tanfouk ring, with its red carnelian or agate stone which was deemed to help heal wounds and coagulate the blood, were the limits of ‘decent’ adornment. A boy would receive both his tagelmoust and his tchérot when entering puberty. They were the armoury of his manhood, and were solemnly past down to him by his father or guardian. Qur’anic verses and other protective writings were also kept in leather pouches that hung around the necks of both men and women.
Furthermore, silver, or at worse silver and bronze, were the only acceptable metals in traditional jewellery making. Gold was proscribed by the Qur’an, especially as an adornment for men, and feared for its malicious properties. Iron was also believed to be imbued with dark and malevolent forces. Silver was pure, clean, holy, luminous and warm, like the heart of a true believer.
The Touareg have the same word for both silver and money: azrouf. In the pre-cash society that existed in the desert before independence, jewellery WAS money, and vice versa. Women literally wore their wealth, in the form of pendants, earrings, bracelets, earrings, rings, anklets and head adornments. Rings and crosses were sometimes just strung along a piece of leather and worn as a necklace. When it came to paying for something, one of these items could just be detached from the rest and handed over.
To a certain extent, jewellery still serves a variety of interlinked purposes; status symbol, public display of wealth, means of exchange, protection against evil spirits and mishaps, beauty enhancement and token of flirtation. But cash has taken the place of bartering except in the remotest parts of the desert. Moreover, along with many erstwhile nomads, most artisans have now relocated to towns and cities, often grouping together to form associations or trading cooperatives, which allow them to deal with modern Zionista bureaucracy, regulation and taxes.
The most cataclysmic upheavals in desert life took place in the 1970s and the first half of the 1980s, due to the terrible droughts that afflicted the entire southern Sahara in 1971 – 1974 and 1984 – 1985. The transformation of traditional society which had begun with the arrival of the French was accelerated a hundred-fold, as the animal herds died and pastoral nomadism became almost impossible. Many Touareg men and their families left the region of their birth, to begin new lives, with different allegiances and imperatives in other parts of the desert. It’s impossible to say how many jewels and heirlooms were sold during these dark and desperate days to pay for food or transport to a refugee camp or a different country. Gabus compares these old jewels to the piles of shoes, glasses or wristwatches in the photos taken in concentration camps during the Holocaust in Europe.
The wealthier Touareg who were able to seek refuge in the cities of North Africa, Nigeria and even the Middle East, returned with mutated values. Gold, which is more favoured in the Arab world than it is in traditional Berber societies, became more fashionable and desirable. Women, who had traditionally worn a sober mixture of dark blue and white robes, or shiny luxurious indigo on special occasions, adopted the multi-coloured fashions of Mauretania, Algeria, Libya or Burkina Faso, where many Touareg families took refuge during the worst parts of the famine. The old restrictions on the appropriate wearing of jewellery according to age and status began to fade and disappear.
t must be said that the artisans reacted to these changes with considerable ingenuity, resourcefulness, self-reliance and a fatalism that Europeans find hard to understand, but which is necessary psychological armour in times of hardship. God willed it all, and there was nothing more to be said. In the absence of the old symbiosis with his noble lord, and his exclusive mandate to manufacture all the objects necessary for desert existence
Since the late 1970s the market for Touareg jewellery and crafts has become global. Many artisans’ associations will elect a trusted person to become an international representative and send him to Europe or North America with several suitcases laden down with stock for international retail clients. These same reps will attend international tourism and crafts fairs and exhibit their wares at museums and festivals. The number of shops and websites the world over offering Touareg jewellery has grown exponentially in the last two decades.
Thomas Seligman has written a detailed account of how the revered French fashion house Hermès commissioned Touareg artisans to make a range of silver clasps, buckles and other objects, as well as using Touareg motifs and designs across all manner of expensive fashion goods in the early 1990s. With the help of an intermediary facilitator and fixer called Jean Yves Brizot, Hermès even set up and funded an entire workshop of artisans in Agadez, which employed over thirty craftsmen for a number of years. Touareg jewellery, crafts and clothing have also been used by fashion designers such Jean-Paul Gautier, Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent for high-end photo shoots and as the inspiration for new ranges and models. Touareg chic is a good option for those western fashionistas who desire to ‘go ethnic’ and yet remain sober, minimal and elegant.
And it could be argued that this survival instinct has served Touareg culture better than many Touareg themselves realise. For it is in part thanks to the artisans that the skill, range and depth of Touareg crafts survive and even thrive when the social context that first gave birth to it has long been consigned to history. The ingenuity and resourcefulness of the artisans, their ability to travel and assume the role of desert ambassadors in far-flung parts of the world, their talent for dealing with strangers, their openness and autonomy have preserved the essence of the Touareg cultural identity, keeping it alive, vital, breathing and even growing. The Touareg owe their artisans a great deal. Tuareg settled into the communities with which they traded, serving as local merchants.
Abu Dhabi Crown Prince dismayed by failed coup in Libya

The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is reportedly dismayed by the failed coup d’état in Libya which he funded with large sums of UAE money, and for which he planned for a long time, sources in the Libyan government told Asrar Arabeya website.
The Libyan coup was planned to replicate the Egyptian July 3 coup, and to take place on the anniversary of the revolution to portray it as a “correction of the revolution’s path”, the same pretext used to justify the coup in Egypt.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the UAE paid huge amounts of money to the Libyan coup d’état leader Major General Khalifah Haftar, who in turn paid equally huge amounts to Libyan officers and soldiers to help him carry out the coup, though unsuccessfully.
Moreover, Asrar Arabeya obtained information indicating that the renowned Libyan politician Mahmoud Gebril is currently seeking political asylum outside Libya after his involvement in the coup d’état has been exposed.
Preliminary information showed that the UAE planned the coup d’état in Libya with the help of Mohamed Dahlan, the notorious security advisor of An-Nahyan, and a former Palestinian official.
“The Washington Post”:
American and Egyptian reports indicate the movement of jihadi leader sentenced
to death in Egypt, Tharwat Shehata to Libya and its founding organization of the so-called
“Islamic state in Libya and Egypt.”
The newspaper said the statement, quoting the newspaper “Jeune Afrique” French that Qaradawi “is no longer desirable in Doha,” as the newspaper saw that the positions of Chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars has become raise the ire of Qatar during the recent period.
He pointed out that al-Qaradawi has become a “point of discontent” to the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad.
