A spokesman for the African leadership in the U.S. Army Bnagamin Benson The preparation of the training plan is still underway, but implementation on the ground, it will remain subject to the improvement of the security conditions in Libya. Bnagamin pointed out that this does not mean abandoning the U.S. military command for the training plan for the Libyan armed forces.

The spokesman said the U.S. military: «Libya after the fall of the regime of Colonel Gaddafi in 2011, moved from chaos to a state of civil war between the spectra of multiple rival, while the regular forces of Libya has become unable to rein in those spectra and carry them to lay down their arms».

Noman Benotman, a former Libyan jihadist leader, spoke at the Durham Union Society on Monday. He spoke about his captivating past, reasons behind al-Qaeda’s anti-western behaviour and possible solutions to terrorism.

Born in Libya in 1967, Noman Benotman’s interest in radical Islamism began in the 1980’s. He had been forced out of university because he was considered to be an “anti-revolutionist.” After numerous attempts to re-enter education and pressure to work in the family business in Spain, he returned to Libya.

There, he began to practice Islam and soon left for Afghanistan to fight against the Soviet Union. He stated how difficult it was to “be a civilian who became a militant.”

After the Soviet withdrawal, he helped to set up the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, hoping to establish an Islamic state in Libya. He then went to Sudan where he forged close links with Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahiri. After warning al-Qaeda of the danger of their aims, he distanced himself from the group and resigned from his own jihadist organisation.

He subsequently joined Quilliam, the world’s first counter-extremism organisation. Here, he published an open letter to his former friend Osama bin Laden. It criticised him for killing innocent civilians and asked him to stop al-Qaeda’s armed operations. This letter was widely publicised in the Muslim world.

Noman Benotman explained how misunderstanding Islam can create terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda.

“If you must fight against a society after it has given you a safe haven,” he stated, “you must leave the country and let them know before you attack. This is the real Islam.”

Benotman also provided possible solutions to terrorism around the world. He believes that al-Qaeda has prepared the West for future attacks. “If we can contain something as strong as al-Qaeda,” he argued, “it will send a message to the other extremist groups.” Benotman feels that it is a Muslim’s duty to speak out and to protect the correct Islam. (ALLAH does not look kindly upon LIARS and false propagandists in his name!)

Guy Miscampbell, a second year Politics and Economics student and Director of debating, described the address as “insightful” and felt that it “explained solutions in great depth.”

Noman Benotman expressed his pleasure to be in Durham. He stressed the importance of “making students aware of terrorism and radical Islam” and stated that “students are the power in society.”

WHO IS bin OTHMAN fooling? “BIO” from MARCH 2013:

Noman Benotman former head of the Libyan militant organization known as the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group. Benotman has been active in reforming his former terrorist comrades in prison, attempting to persuade them to renounce violence. He wrote an open letter to Osama bin Laden in 2010 repudiating al-Qaeda‘s use of violence, and calling on bin Laden to unilaterally halt all attacks. He is also a Senior Analyst (Strategic Communications) at Quilliam, a British-government-funded Middle East focused think tank.

Noman Benotman has lived a hard life living in exile overseas during the “Qaddafi‘s regime of 42 years of power”*(1) hold on Libya. Noman comes from a wealthy Tripolitania family that suffered under the past regime* (2), Qaddafi confiscated many properties like land, houses, factories and buildings belonging to Noman’s father and many other well known Libyan families that also lived a harsh life under the “Qaddafi regime”*(2)

During the 80’s the beginning of Qaddafi’s oppression on many Libyans, Noman fled Libya and decided to join the Jihad call to take up arms during the Soviet occupation in Afghanistan, he fought for an Islamic cause and made many friends in his teenaged life. After several years of fighting Communists Russia that invaded Afghanistan the Jihad was a victory to all Muslims, Russia withdraws its troops from Afghanistan.

Noman then realized with the knowledge gained fighting the Soviets in Afghanistan, using guerilla combat tactics that his country was also occupied and needed to do the same in Libya, establishing a network of Libyans to fight Qaddafi and to overthrow the regime from power establishment of the ( LIFG ) the Libyan Islamic fighting group came to birth in the late 80’s early 90’s there mission target was Qaddafi . The LIFG was the most feared by from Qaddafi they have taken the war to his door using all tactics to combat Qaddafi and his force’s in Libya.

Many attempts on Qaddafi’s life were made during the regimes 42 years of power but none were successful enough to end his life. Qaddafi used Libya’s Oil reserves and all assets he could to stay in power to fight the LIFG Islamists and other Libyan organizations. Qaddafi was successful crushing the Revolt in the 90’s and many LIFG members were caught captured and killed some served in Libya’s Notorious famous Prison named Abou Sleem and awaiting death sentence . The LIFG kept fighting until the September 11th attacks on the United States soil. It was a blow to the organization leaving America and the United Kingdom only to label the LIFG as a terrorist organization bringing all operation to overthrow Qaddafi from power to a full stop, reports showed that Bin Laden had funded the LIFG baking the group with funds and helping them obtain weapons. In the beginning of 2007 with pressure from Libya by Qaddafi requesting the British Government to hand over people Like Noman to Libyan Authorities labeling them terrorists, Noman was forced to fight for his life in London obtaining a UK citizenship helping Noman not to be extradited to Libya he was active in Politics and was chosen to mediate the release of his former comrades in arms, He had the support of the British government and was backed by the new slogan ( de-radicalization of Hardcore Islamists ) Qaddafi was shocked and frustrated by the UK and had no choice but to accept the UK Government proposal if he ever wanted back in the world international community.

Noman was very successful in mediating the release of his former comrades. Many regarded Noman as a traitor for dealing with “the Qaddafi regime” *(2) during 2007/2010 mediation but he had no choice, in the end Noman saw his fellow Comrades as brothers and had to do something to save their lives. (HAH!)

At present he is the president of Quillam Foundation in London. He has appeared on many TV channels as an expert in Terrorism and the Middle east, more recently as the expert on the “Arab Spring”*(3) and its effects; despite working with Saif al-Islam Gaddafi to free his comrades from the notorious prison named Abousleem. At the time of the start of the Libyan uprising, he was in Tripoli meeting with Saif Gaddafi with the supervision of the British Government, calling some of the rebels ‘Al Qaeda’ operatives pointing to Mokhtar Belmokhtar as he had information during the Libyan uprising that some Islamic hardcore militant had entered Libya.

The Washington Post quoted Benotman in 2006 in a profile of Atiyah Abd al-Rahman Sowaihilli, another Libyan exile who was to rise to a senior membership of Al Qaeda‘s leadership. Benotman said that Atiyah had been taken captive by the Armed Islamic Group, in Algeria, in the mid 1990s.

(CNN) — A former Egyptian army lieutenant and long-time Islamist Saif al Adel has been appointed the interim leader of al Qaeda, according to former jihadist Noman Benotman.

The move suggests indecisiveness and a possible power struggle within the organization says Benotman, now a senior analyst at the Quilliam Foundation, a London-based “counter-terrorism” think tank.

The death of Osama bin Laden — al Qaeda’s founder and strategic guiding force — has left a power vacuum at the top which many security analysts predicted would be filled by bin Laden’s deputy Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Al-Zawahiri has played a defining role in al Qaeda for over a decade, so why has Adel been appointed the caretaker leader instead?

Who is Saif al Adel?

A former Egyptian army lieutenant and long-time member of Ayman al-Zawahiri’s Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ), Adel is believed to have returned to the tribal areas of Pakistan last year after a period of house arrest in Iran.

Adel has provided military and intelligence training for al Qaeda members as early as 1990 and was a member of al Qaeda’s “shura” council.

According to a former jihadist, Adel is believed to currently occupy the “chief of staff” position within al Qaeda, managing insurgent paramilitary operations in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region, with a special remit to manage the group’s relations with other jihadist groups and affiliates.

Adel has been involved in militant activities since the late 1980s, according to an interview with him published in spring 2005 in the Arabic-language London-based daily Al-Quds al-Arabi.

He is wanted by the FBI in connection with al Qaeda’s 1998 attacks on the U.S. embassies in Nairobi, Kenya and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, killing 224 people.

Will al-Adel replace bin Laden?

“They (al Qaeda) don’t need a military commander as their leader… they need someone who holds a vision, who maintains that vision and makes sure he communicates that vision to the organization,” says Benotman, once a leader of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), a militant organization that used to be aligned with al Qaeda.

Benotman says al Qaeda needs a spiritual figurehead who will guide the group and who has the charisma to appeal to millions of people.

Why hasn’t al-Zawahiri been appointed interim head?

“Al-Zawahiri has a negative reputation with other jihadist groups,” says Benotman.

It is also possible that some within al Qaeda fear that al-Zawahiri will be the next target of intelligence agencies.

The FBI is offering a 18.4€ million reward for information leading to his capture — the same as the reward for bin Laden — reflecting al-Zawahiri’s importance to the United States.

Paul Cruickshank, a CNN terrorism analyst, said: “Of all al Qaeda’s senior leaders, al-Zawahiri is probably the one in most jeopardy. Western intelligence officers have told us that in recent times bin Laden and al-Zawahiri were probably in relatively close geographic proximity and also in touch to some degree, so all this information may help America track down al-Zawahiri.”

So, is there a power struggle within al Qaeda?

Possibly — the fact that it has taken so long just to announce an interim leader could point to a power struggle of some kind suggests Benotman.

According to Benotman, Adel’s appointment was not a decision of the formal shura council of al Qaeda, because it is currently impossible to gather them in one place, but was rather the decision of six to eight leaders of al Qaeda in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border area.

He believes al Qaeda has moved some of its operations to Afghanistan, east of Jalalabad near the Pakistan border because of fears of what intelligence the U.S. has gained from bin Laden’s compound.

At the same time, the group’s Yemeni wing — al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula — is trying to position itself for greater power and influence (a U.S. official told CNN).

What does this mean for al Qaeda’s relationship with the Taliban?

The pact between al Qaeda and the Taliban was based on a personal relationship between Mullah Omar, the militant Islamic group’s leader, and bin Laden, says Benotman.

“If Mullah Omar disappears or something happens to him it is going to be very risky for maintaining the relationship,” says Benotman.

U.S. drone strikes over Afghanistan and Pakistan have also debilitated al Qaeda’s ability to operate believes Benotman.
